Multi-touch: Definition of Terms

The multi touch market is emerging quickly and thus there is plenty of confusion of terms as the market is maturing. Wikipedia defines "Multi touch" as "a method of interacting with a computer screen or smartphone... allows the user to interact with the device by placing two or more fingers directly onto the surface of the screen. The movement of the fingers across the screen creates gestures, which send commands to the device. The term multi-touch is a trademark of Apple Inc"

The multi touch user interface can be implemented on a range of devices including, screens, tables, and walls. Therefore we see phrases like: Touchscreen, Touchtable and Touchwall. Alternatively these are referred to as Multi-touch screen, Multi-touch table and Multi-touch walls.

The term "large format multi-touch" is used to refer to larger displays however the term fails to quantify the resolution. Scalable Display uniquely enables the creation of large format multi-touch displays be easily scaling resolution to as much as six times HD for a Windows desktop.
